The Poetic Edda: The Whetting of Gudrun to the Waking of Angantyr (Mythic Mind)
Join Andrew Snyder and members of the Mythic Mind Fellowship as we work our way through the Poetic Edda. In this conversation, we discuss The Whetting of Gudrun, The Lay of Hamdir, Baldr's Dreams, The List of Rig, The Song of Hyndla, The Song of Grotti, Groa's Chant, The Sayings of Fiolsvinn, and The Waking of Angantyr.
We finish the Edda with the last heroic poems, Gudrun urging her sons to revenge and Hamdir's doomed ride, and then range through the poems gathered at the end of the collection: Odin riding to learn why Baldr dreams of death, Rig fathering the orders of society, Freyja's visit to the giantess Hyndla, the magic mill Grotti, Svipdag's quest, and Hervor waking her dead father for his sword.
Baldr's death is where the old myths come nearest the Gospel, and ending there lets us look back on the whole Edda as a broken and beautiful witness to the story Christ makes true.
