Exploring the Psyche: Anxiety, Video Games, and Kierkegaard

Hello friends,

This is our weekly round-up, in which I tell you a little about what Mythic Mind has been doing and planning over the last week.

This week, much of our attention has turned to anxiety, not simply as something unpleasant to be eliminated, but as something that may reveal something important about freedom, agency, and what it means to become a self.

1. On Mythic Mind: [Anxiety Means You Can Choose]

Anxiety is usually treated as a problem to be eliminated. Medication and psychotherapy have their place, but what if, in our pursuit of mental health, we sometimes treat as pathology something essential to being human?

Join me along with licensed psychotherapists Jeremy Kee and Tyler Finders to discuss the question of anxiety.

2. On Mythic Mind Games: [Video Games and the Psyche: Agency, Anxiety, and Upbuilding]

What can video games reveal about agency, choice, and the psyche?

I discuss why games deserve a place alongside literature and film as objects of serious reflection, and why they have a particularly interesting place in our season of Exploring the Psyche.

3. In the Inkwell: [What Is Anxiety? Kierkegaard and the Psychology of Freedom]

If you'd like a shorter introduction to the ideas behind this week's main episode, I introduce Kierkegaard's famous description of anxiety as “the dizziness of freedom"

4. The Silmarillion course is opening

The Silmarillion course is now available to Companions, and Fellows will receive access on September 14. If you're already in, the reading companion videos and recorded discussions are waiting for you.
