Princess Mononoke: Ashitaka Between Forest and Forge (Mythic Mind Movies, ep. 15)
In this episode
Princess Mononoke is not a simple “nature good, people bad” fable. Ashitaka walks between forest gods and Iron Town with a death curse on him, trying to see with eyes unclouded by hate while San and Lady Eboshi pull the world toward opposite fidelities.
In this Mythic Mind Movies conversation, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) and guests take up Miyazaki’s Muromachi-period fantasy (a Discord pick that finally pulled Andrew into anime territory, without turning the episode into that meta story). They discuss Miyazaki’s project memo on unchanging human nature in an age of upheaval, Iron Works as industrial mercy and militarized craft, the Forest Spirit’s strange holiness, and why Ashitaka looks like a traitor to both sides when he treats enemies as persons.
Topics include curse and coexistence, satoyama-shaped living at the edge of wild and village, hate as the real poison, gods and kami on screen, and fantasy that refuses easy villains.
